As the Regional Tourism Council for our area, we discussed the ways that MBVB markets destinations such as the City of Marlborough, the businesses and recreational assets here, and how they work with the Commonwealth to keep us all on the map for visitors near and far.

Board Member Spotlight 
 

MEDC Board of Directors Spotlight is a series put together to introduce members serving on our Board of Directors and share more about the people that help guide the team in carrying out MEDC's mission and implement the city's economic development goals annually.

 

This month, we are happy to feature Michael Ossing, Marlborough's City Council President. A member of the City Council since 2000, President Ossing also serves as the Chairman of Marlborough's Municipal Aggregation Committee and a member of the Board of Trustees for Marlborough's Other Post-Employment Benefits Trust Fund.

Economic Development Toolbox
 
MEDC is happy to announce that Moeshmallows is a recipient of an MEDC Toolbox Grant Award.
Moeshmallows' humble beginnings in a home kitchen will be transformed into a new storefront business with the assistance of this program. The Amenities Financing Program will provide Moeshmallows with rental assistance as well as the ability to renovate its new space and purchase new equipment. 
 
USA Ninja Challenge - Marlborough is also a grant recipient of the MEDC Amenities Financing Program. New ownership of the youth obstacle course facility kept the doors open at this existing Marlborough business. The reimbursement grant program will assist USA Ninja Challenge with purchasing new equipment, facility updates, and rental assistance.
 
MEDC Announces Braden Deckers As Summer Intern
 
MEDC is thrilled to introduce this summer's amazing intern, Braden Deckers. A Marlborough resident and AMSA graduate, Braden joins the team following the completion of his sophomore year at George Washington University in Washington, DC. Braden is currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in economics and minors in Data Science and Political Science. Braden is working on updating the city's commercial space inventory and following the economic impact of mixed-use developments in Marlborough.

Vibes Candles Opens Storefront on Main Street

 

Vibes Candles has officially opened its doors on Marlborough's Main Street, hosting its grand opening on May 31. Make sure to stop by and check out a variety of high-quality hand-poured candles, incense, wax melts, reed diffusers, bath and body products as well as many other offerings.

UMass Memorial Health - Marlborough Hospital held its 22nd Annual Safe Summer Fun Day on June 1st. The event kicked off the summer with lots of family-friendly excitement while promoting health and safety. The annual fair featured fun activities, safety tips from local police and fire departments, information booths, and so much more. Make sure to mark your calendar for next year's event!
Nasuni, Marlborough-based Cloud Company, Announces Rebranding
 
Nasuni has rebranded, refreshing the company’s logo, website, and brand messaging. The rebranding comes as Nasuni experienced 46% growth in new customer annual contract value bookings with the addition of more than 120 new enterprise customers in its fiscal year ending in 2023.
Boston Scientific Enters Agreement with Silk Road Medical, Inc. 
 
Boston Scientific has announced a new agreement with Silk Road Medical. A medical device company, Silk Road Medical develops products that aim to prevent strokes in patients with carotid artery disease. The addition of Silk Road Medical is expected to enhance Boston Scientific's advancements in innovative stroke prevention care.

ExaGrid Wins "Enterprise Backup Hardware Vendor of the Year" and more at Storage Awards 2024 

 

ExaGrid,the industry’s only Tiered Backup Storage solution with Retention Time-Lock and the only non-network-facing tiered air gap with delayed deletes and immutability for ransomware recovery, received two awards at this year's Storage Awards in London. ExaGrid was named the Enterprise Backup Hardware Vendor or the Year and co-winner of the Storage Soluation of the Year Corporate.

Aspen Aerogels Celebrates First Anniversary at Marlborough Location

 

Aspen Aerogels recently celebrated the one-year anniversary of opening it's Advanced Thermal Barrier Center (ATBC) in Marlborough. A leader in electrification solutions and aerogel-based sustainability, Aspen Aerogels opened the 59,000-square-foot facility to house it's PyroThin cell-to-cell barrier engineering programs.

Multiple Marlborough Businesses Ranked on Forbes Best Employers for Diversity List
 
Boston Scientific, DuPont, and Raytheon and have all been named to the Forbes  2024 Best Employers for Diversity List. The annual list is based on a survey that is distributed by Forbes to companies with at least 1,000 US-based employees. Participants are asked to evaluate their businesses' approach to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI).

Auntie Anne's, The Local Artizan Come to Solomon Pond Mall
 
Solomon Pond Mall has announced the addition of two new stores - Auntie Anne's Pretzels and The Local Artizan.
 
Auntie Anne's is open and serving up its iconic pretzels as well as other delicious treats and beverages. The Local Artizan will be opening soon and feature hand-crafted products and offerings from several local artists.

Main Street Bank Awards Grants to Local Charities
 
The Main Street Bank Charitable Foundation has awarded $30,000 in grants to multiple local charities. Among the recipients are MetroWest Free Medical Program, Friends of Children & Families, MetroWest Women's Fund, and the Community Foundation of MetroWest. These grants are awarded to regional organizations that strive to improve the quality of life for its community members.
STATE AND REGIONAL UPDATES
MassDOT Launches Comment Period for Capital Investment Plan
 
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) has posted the dates for public comment for the Fiscal Year 2025-2029 five-year Capital Investment Plan (CIP). The public comment period will be held from June 20-July 10. The five-year plan is for an estimated $16.5 billion dollars of which more than $800 million is proposed to be put towards the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA).
MWRTA Increasing Summer Services in Marlborough
 
The MetroWest Regional Transit Authority (MWRTA) has announced this summer the addition of express travel on the Marlborough Route 7 bus. The new express routes will reduce travel time for riders who are traveling between Marlborough and Framingham.
WHAT WE'RE FOLLOWING
Donald Lynch Boulevard Re-Zoning 

 

The City Council Urban Affairs Committee (UAC) held a meeting on June 24th to review the Donald Lynch Boulevard District (DLB) Zoning proposal.

 

This new zoning district would encourage increased walkability and allow for more diverse use of the land including additional restaurants, drive-thrus, mixed-use projects, and other commercially viable uses for that area. 

Alta Behavioral Health receives Special Permit 

 

The Marlborough City Council approved a Special Permit for Alta Behavioral Health LLC, to open a nonresidential, outpatient substance abuse treatment facility at 400 Donald Lynch Boulevard. 

Lizotte Drive Overlay District 

 

The City Council Urban Affairs Committee (UAC) held a meeting on June 24th to review the Lizotte Drive Overlay District (LDOD) zoning proposal which would allow for residential use in the proposed area.

 

The UAC had a favorable recommendation (5-0) and the proposal will now go back to the full Council for review. 

City Council Approves Mixed-Use Project at 57 Main Street 
 
The mixed-use proposal for the former Rowe Funeral Home has received approval by the Marlborough City Council. The approved project includes 92 units with 80 on-site parking spaces. 
  
Local Non-Profit Receives State Approval 
 
Marlborough-based non-profit organization, Team Sharing Inc., has received approval from the Massachusetts RMV for a proposed special license plate to help with efforts to raise overdose awareness. 750 pre-orders are needed for production.
